A garden pond can look like a real jewel in our garden, exuding serenity if we want a little relaxation, however, to be truly beautiful, it requires constant care and cleaning.

Garden lake - Replenishment of water resources

Due to the warm weather, the water can evaporate from the lake and the plants also use water. Most garden ponds have a water circulation system, so there is usually a built-in water level meter that detects the loss of water in the pond, and before it drops to a critical level, another part of the system makes up for the lost water. In smaller ponds, it is enough to fill the missing amount of water with a hose, but in larger ponds, it is worth installing such a system.

Garden pond - Water quality control, mitigation

It is common for water to rise above pH 7.0, i.e., become alkaline. This is unfortunately a very favorable condition for the growth of algae, which is unfortunate because it and the high content of organic matter and oxygen favor the growth of algae. This can be avoided by not feeding the algae and reducing the intake of organic matter such as leaves and branches. Aquatic plants also need nutrients, so they can also reduce the presence of organic matter. In addition, we can protect against algae growth with the continuous flow of water and UV filters.

Leaves and plant residues that have come to the surface of the garden water must also be removed regularly with a net so that they do not settle.

When feeding aquatic animals, make sure you only get as much food into the water as is really needed, thus preventing the accumulation of too much organic matter. Incidentally, this is no longer necessary with a garden pond in optimal condition, as the fish will then have enough food available. In the pet food shop you can also buy food-producing organisms that can reproduce in the lake, such as worms and water fleas.

Garden Pond - Lots of fish aren't ideal either

In the case of a garden pond, it is important to have the ideal balance in the wildlife, so it is unfortunate to breed too many fish. During lake cleaning, it is worth fishing for specimens to be selected. Sunfish and perch can help by consuming fish crabs.

Garden lake - Winterization

One of the most important maintenance work is the winterization of the garden pond. Many times it is necessary to drain the lake, which can be easily done with a pump or drain, and then we can reuse the water to water our plants and lawns. This is not necessary for lakes with sloping side walls and a minimum depth of 1 m. Then, to prevent the leak from freezing, it is advisable to get a pump antifreeze that also delivers fresh oxygen to the pond.

Filter and cleaning and plumbing equipment should also be maintained, cleaned, inspected and, if necessary, repaired as soon as possible. This is worth doing during winterization, as we have to put them out of the frost anyway, or at least foil them. It is also advisable to test the lighting technology dry.
